FAMILY SPONSORSHIP
PERMANENT RESIDENT
Who can you sponsor?
Canada's family reunification programs allow eligible sponsors to bring their closest family members to Canada as permanent residents. The relationship between the sponsor and the applicant determines which stream applies and what requirements must be met.
Partner and Children
Sponsor your spouse, common-law partner, conjugal partner, or dependent children. Applications can be submitted from inside or outside Canada.
Parents and grandparents
Sponsor your parents or grandparents through the Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP). Spots are limited and open through an annual intake process.
Other relatives
Other relatives can only be sponsored in very specific circumstances — for example, if you have no close family in Canada or abroad and meet certain conditions.
Sponsor requirements
-
Status: Canadian citizen or permanent resident
-
Age: 18 years or older
-
Residence: Living in Canada (or planning to when the sponsored person arrives, if Canadian citizen)
-
Financial ability: Able to financially support the sponsored person (income requirements apply for parents & grandparents)
