Canada's federal skilled worker system

What is Express Entry?

Express Entry is a point-based selection system that manages applications for three federal immigration programs. Candidates create an online profile and receive a Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score based on factors such as age, education, language skills, and work experience.​​

IRCC holds regular rounds of invitations — called draws — where candidates above a certain CRS score threshold receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residence.

Federal Programs

Federal Skilled Workers
(FSWP)

For skilled workers with foreign work experience who meet the minimum education, language, and points requirements.

Canadian Experience Class (CEC)

For workers who already have at least one year of skilled work experience in Canada within the last three years.

Federal Skilled Trades (FSTP)

For workers qualified in a skilled trade who have an offer of employment or a certificate of qualification in Canada.

Category-based selection rounds

In addition to general draws, IRCC runs category-based rounds targeting candidates with specific skills that Canada needs. These rounds have their own CRS cut-off and eligibility requirements, separate from general draws. Categories are reviewed annually. Current active categories:

French language proficiency

Must achieve CLB/NCLC 7 or above in all four language abilities,

Healthcare and social services

Includes family physicians, nurse practitioners, dentists, pharmacists, psychologists, and chiropractors, among others.

Trades

Carpenters, plumbers, contractors, and related skilled trade occupations listed by IRCC.

Education

​Teachers, early childhood educators, and instructors of persons with disabilities.

CRS score factors

  • Age

  • Level of education

  • Language proficiency (English & French)

  • Canadian & foreign work experience

  • Adaptability (spouse's factors, study/work in Canada)

  • Provincial nomination (+600 points)

  • Valid job offer
